Marc Jacobs closes New York Fashion Week in swirl of controversy, neon lights and dreadlocks

Marc Jacobs sure knows how to throw a farewell party. The finale of the New York Fashion week fell in the hands of the New York-based designer - and with typical Marc Jacobs extravagance, it didn't disappoint.

Decorating the Hammerstein Ballroom with a sea of lightbulbs and a club atmosphere, complete with water spills on the floor, and  guests like Sofia Coppola, Courtney Love, Whoopi Goldberg, Anna Wintour, Terry Richardson, Demi Lovato, Carla Gugino, Malin Ackerman, Christina Ricci, Zosia Mamet and - flashback alert - '90s model Niki Taylor randomly sat front row.

Casting Bella, Gigi, Kendall, Karlie Kloss, Irina Shayk, Adriana Lima, Jourdan Dunn, Taylor Hill and Stella Maxwell in the show - for obvious reasons - the girls' hair was controversially transformed into multi-coloured '90s-era raver dreads. Almost immediately, the move attracted criticisms of cultural appropriation, with many Twitter users ripping into the designer.

And the clothes? Sequins, gold lamé, babydoll dresses, hot pants, animal print and khaki - it was a mashup of clubbing extravagance - right down to the rainbow-striped long socks and towering platforms. Click through the gallery above to see the highlights.
