Toni Maticevski did it last year, Kym Ellery owned it the year before and for 2017, it looks like another uber-successful Australian designer is opening MBFWA. Yep, the illustrious spot for the opening night show (aka 'Mercedes-Benz Presents') has landed in the comfortable hands of one of Australia's leading designers: Dion Lee.

Set to show his Resort '18 collection on Sunday, May 14, The New York-based Aussie will also officially kick off proceedings as a Friend of the Brand to MBFWA sponsor Mercedes-Benz. "It's great that Mercedes-Benz Australia has been able to support one designer each year in a show that really does help to define a designer's vision and amplify that globally," says Lee.

The honourable opening night spot has been taken up by established designers such as Maticevski, Ellery and Carla Zampatti in recent years - and even though Dion Lee has been tasting international success for the past few seasons and showing at NYFW, we have no doubt the label will welcome being back on home turf. After all, it was just eight years ago that the brand made its debut at MBFWA in 2009.
