Juergen Teller spills on THAT infamous Kim and Kanye shoot
Who could forget?
If you can quickly cast your mind back to July this year, you may recall the most parodied shoot of 2015 - Kanye, Juergen & Kim for System magazine. While some of us are still desperately trying to pick up our slack jaws from the floor, the rest will never be able to un-see the flesh-toned-underwear-and-black-suspender-tights ensemble that Yeezy deemed so perfect for his (then) platinum-haired wife. In case you need a refresher, here you go:
Considering this will easily go down as one of pop culture's most bizarre collaborations of all time, it seemed only fair to include the shoot in a recent exhibit of Juergen Teller's works in London's Berkeley Square. To mark the occasion, Tim Blanks interviewed the German fashion photographer on behalf of Business of Fashion and managed to score some amazing nuggets of goss from the history making shoot.
Here, we've pulled some of the interview highlights, plus some never before seen polaroids snapped on that fateful day:
After previously shooting Kanye for The New York Times, Teller suggested meeting Yeezy in Paris for a second outing, this time with Mrs West in attendance:
"I said, 'What about doing something with your wife?' And he said, 'I'll style her'. Stupid me, I thought I'm just going to go over there for half an hour to photograph her in their hotel room. But that wasn't fun for them at all. Kanye ordered in all the clothes, and the hair and make-up and suddenly it was a big production. Then I realised what I'd got myself into."

Even though the original shoot was planned to take place in the majestic surrounds of Chateau D'Ambleville, Teller explained why he made a last-ditch detour into the French wilderness instead:
"But when we got there I suddenly thought this beautiful French garden looked too much like their wedding in Italy. It didn't feel quite right. And I'm seeing all this countryside around and I'm thinking, 'I just want to do it there.'"

Even though Teller admits to handing over retouching control to the Wests (something he'd ordinarily never do), he believes that the raw, er, vitality, of the shoot came from his personal talents alone:
"They only do it because they see it in me. It's very difficult to explain, but it makes complete sense. I want adventure in my life. I want to do things I haven't done before. These Hollywood people are so careful of their image and looking right, but there's a wildness when I come into the photographs. I just want to wade through rivers, climb mountains. And I prevail."
And that, he sure did.
