The friendship between fashion and pop stars has always been tight. Especially when it's so 2016 for musicians like Kanye West and Rihanna to turn their hand to fashion design - admittedly, with varying degrees of success. Nevertheless, it's becoming increasingly important for designers to team up with Hot Young Things who can spruik their wares to their millions of social followers. In fact, we think Tommy Hilfiger's Gigi Hadid line must have impressed Donatella Versace so much that she was inspired to do the very same with Gigi's boyfriend Zayn Malik.
The former One Direction singer is partnering with Versus Versace for his own capsule collection. Titled Zayn x Versus, it will encompass both menswear and womenswear and is scheduled to launch in May 2017. And in a gesture of goodwill, instead of dropping proceeds directly into this back pocket, Zayn will be donating proceeds to a yet-to-be-named charity - nice.
"I think Versus has always been a very cool brand. It's a great brand for me and for people in my generation," says 23 year old Mailk, who will also star in the upcoming Versus S/S '17 campaign next year. "I've always wanted to design clothes, and there's no brand I'd rather design for than Versus. The bonus is that I get to collaborate with Donatella, whom I love and admire."
It's a savvy move for Versace too, with Donatella no doubt mindful of just how lucrative this move will be. Zayn's obvious millennial appeal - and 15.3m Instagram and 20.2, Twitter followers - surely won't hurt. "When we first met, he told me how much he loves fashion. I though it would be fantastic to collaborate on a new Versus collection together," says Donatella. "And given Zayn's huge fan base around the world, I expect there will be a lot of excitement about what we create together." You don't say.
As if the world wasn't already obsessed with Gigi and Zayn enough - we reckon this move makes them a contender for Gen-Y's biggest power couple. Surely the couple that designs (and makes tons of money together), stays together? Now, that's what we call #couplegoals
