For Samantha in Sex and the City, it was as far as posing as Lucy Liu's publicist and hurling expletives at an Hermès shopgirl. For others, like this anonymous bidder at a Hong Kong Christie's auction, it's paying approximately HK$1.72 million ($290,000) for a fuchsia crocodile skin Birkin encrusted with diamonds. Yep, that really happened.

Admittedly, while it's eye-opening that there are individuals out there willing to drop $290K on a women's handbag, we're sort of scratching our heads that it's this particular bright pink carryall that has set a new record for the most expensive handbag sold at auction.

Holy handbag! Would you pay $290,000 for an Hermès Birkin?

Sure, we love the classic Birkin design and the rare colour is certainly unique, but - really? Yesterday's rare handbag auction featured some stunning Hermès Kelly and Birkin bags in more style friendly colours such as black, matte white and Bordeaux... but we guess, when you've gotta have a bright pink Birkin, you've gotta have it. Wonder who the lucky recipient is?

For those interested in rare handbag sales, the previous record for the most expensive handbag sold at auction was for a gold and diamond Birkin once owned by Elizabeth Taylor. She was Hollywood royalty, after all.
