The Bassike girls answer your most pertinent style questions
In the world of wardrobe staples, Australian label Bassike sits at the very top. After launching their organic T-shirt line back in 2006, the brand has quickly evolved to become a powerhouse of men's and women's ready-to-wear, denim, accessories, footwear and homewares - each collection stamped with the label's unmistakeable ease and pared-back silhouettes.
Tonight, Mary Lou Ryan (one half of the design duo) appears at the Strand Arcade's Evening with our Designers event alongside a host of other top Australian design talent like Dion Lee, Camilla & Marc, Jac + Jack's Lisa Dempsey, Aje's Edwina Robinson and Dinosaur Designs' Louise Olsen. So in honour of the evening, we asked both Deb and Mary Lou to share a few of their new season finds and style tips. Naturally, their answers are simple and straightforward as their designs...
What trends are you into this season?
From the current collection we are loving the draped crepe tailoring, classic straight leg jeans cropped at the ankle, fleece hoodies and trench coats.
What are your top 5 buys for this season?
- The natural twill trench.
- Black lace-up suede flat.
- Hi-waisted cotton drill pants in cardamom.
- A pair of exquisite Karolin Studio agate earrings, exclusive to bassike in Australia.
- Our shrunken denim jacket.
Do you have any style rules that you abide by?
Make wardrobe decisions that align with your signature style.
What would you say your go-to outfit is?
A well-cut pair of pants, a white T-shirt, a pair of earrings and some flats.
Is there any trend or item of clothing you would never wear?
We are certainly purists - we steer clear of anything that is not well designed or of poor quality.
Whose personal style do you admire?
What do you wear when you're just relaxing at home?
Classic crop jeans, a fleece sweat, and trainers.
Who are your all-time favourite designers or brands?

'90s Helmut Lang.
How would you describe Australian style?
Unique, relaxed, and contemporary. Much like our culture.
Do you have anything that you now regret wearing?
There have been some misses, but nothing we regret.
