Australian label Alice McCall continues to go from strength to strength, releasing season after season of floaty, ethereal and just-the-right-amount-of-offbeat clothing. With a new Cruise '16 campaign starring Kansas-born babe and Vogue cover girl Lindsey Wixson and two new Australian store openings for 2016, we sit down with designer Alice McCall to get the inside goss on everything happening in the brand's universe.
US model Lindsey Wixson stars in this season's campaign - what makes her a perfect Alice McCall girl?
Lindsey personifies the Alice McCall brand - she is pretty and cool with a quirky undertone - much like our designs.
What were some of your references for the campaign?
I wanted to create a campaign that had a high-end, aspirational feel - with an edge. I began by looking at old Helmut Newton poolside shoots, as well as prints by Slim Aarons. The look evolved from there, as things do, to more of an urban 70's feel.
The Goldstein Residence is such an incredible, iconic Hollywood space to shoot in! What was it like?
We predominantly used the garden for the shoot, as it suited the product more. James Goldstein was there, and he lived up to his reputation of being a wonderful, exuberant host.
Can you talk about the cruise collection direction and your ideas behind this?
I have been obsessed with Laura Ashley interiors since I was a young girl. The draping, granny-chic grandeur of Laura Ashley fabrics has been a huge source of inspiration for this collection, as have Renaissance interiors. I worked with authentic interior and haberdashery trims, while keeping in mind that the collection also needed to be modern and non-theatrical. I balanced the granny-chic out with cool denim pieces and classic lace garments.
You've got a lot going on this year - what exciting updates you can share?
We are looking forward to opening new stores - we have just opened a boutique in Pacific Fair, Broadbeach and will be opening a boutique in Emporium, Melbourne soon! I am also really excited about New York Fashion Week - we will be showing our autumn/winter '17 collection in the penthouse at The Soho Grand.
