Five minutes with model and actress Jessica Gomes
Not just a pretty face, the David Jones ambassador has dipped her toes into the acting world and has also foundered her own travel-friendly skin care line. Samantha Ledlin chats to Jessica Gomes on life, David Jones, fashion and fitness.
What's the best thing about being home in Australia?
I would say probably, the beaches. I'm staying in Bondi so it's amazing. It's been really nice to just come home to the fresh air and staying by the sea.
You've walked the David Jones Seasons Launch for years; what does a typical show day look like for you?
It's just so hectic, we've got back to back press interviews, rehearsals, fittings, last minute changes - just everything is happening at once and it is always super hectic. I don't think people realise that before the show we're the busiest we're ever going to be. I wish that I could just be putting my feet up and relaxing before the show but it is actually chaos. It's fun, and you just take it all in really and it makes you excited for the show.
In terms of training and diet, how do you prepare for a runway show like tonight?
I've really changed it up this season usually I go gung-ho dieting and hard core training. But this time I had two months in LA, no travelling, I was doing yoga every day, I was doing hikes and I just feel so amazing. I feel really happy and I think it's mostly important to feel mentally well and mentally happy. I feel really comfortable in my skin and really relaxed - super chill this year.
It's no secret that the modelling industry can be fickle at times. What is the biggest lesson you have learnt in your career as a model?
I think the biggest lesson that I have learned is that you can't be liked by everyone and you just have to really know who you are and really stand in your truth. At the end of the day I think that it's a job and you just have to do the best that you can. The most important thing is to just be yourself. I think that everyone always tried to put you into a box or make you into something, or say 'you need to do this and that.' For me I have been the happiest when I have been myself and I don't have any negativity around me. It's so important to have good people around you that are supporting you, because it can be really competitive and catty at times.
David Jones is showcasing their summer collection, what fashion trends can we expect to see coming out of David Jones this summer?
It's everything under the sun, so you've got all the bright colours. Red is one of the big colours [this season]. New Romantic, which is super cute florals. Purity, which includes all flowy white dresses. The 80s are back with strong shoulders. There is a lot of diversity in this show, there's active wear, there's swim wear, there's evening wear. It is a really amazing collection and I think a lot of people are going to be excited to see the diversity of clothing.
Who are your favourite Aussie designers?
Based in LA who are just coming out of summer, what is your go-to summer outfit or something that every girl needs in her wardrobe this summer?
Definitely a cute summer dress and a cute little basket bag is really on trend. I brought a little vintage bag this summer and I've been wearing a lot of cute floral dresses everywhere, because it's LA, it's so easy. A cute pair of vintage Levi's with a white tee-shirt is cool too.
Your job involves travelling back and forth - do you have a secret for on the go beauty when travelling? (Equal Beauty)
Equal Beauty, my skin care range is all made for travel. So I have got five products in the range and I use them every time I travel, because they're so travel friendly.
And the nature of your job doesn't really allow for bad skin days. What is your quick skin fix for any blemishes that could pop up over night?
Concealer! Makeup is a beautiful thing and you can really paint your face any way you want, so I am very thankful for makeup in my job.
You've also cracked the acting world (Transformers / Once Upon A Time in Venice) - Is this something we can expect to see more of in the future?
I love it! So hopefully there will be more in the future. Bastards comes out in December so I am really excited for that to come out.
