During a recent trip to Sydney to walk in VAMFF for David Jones, we spent time with model turned jewellery designer Erin Wasson

The original poster girl for model-off-duty cool, Texan-born beauty Erin Wasson has been inspiring girls with her lo-fi, Cali-meets-cowboy style since her modelling debut back in early noughties. A friend and muse of streetwear-inspired designer Alexander Wang (the two go way back - she even styled some of his career-defining early shows), Erin's much-copied skater girl aesthetic naturally paved the way for a successful costume jewellery line, Low Luv, and collaborations with labels like RVCA.

After walking away from Low Luv some time ago, Erin took time out from jewellery design... only to eventually gravitate back to it, just in a different form. "I've been working on Wasson Fine for about two years," she reveals. "After I stopped doing Low Luv, I took a nice long break and really reassessed what I wanted to do in the visual world and how I wanted to do it." The result? A tightly edited collection of fine jewellery utilising precious metals like 18k gold and precious stones like diamonds and South Sea pearls. Now aged 34, and taking on small acting roles instead of modelling, Erin's change of lifestyle spurred a desire to create pieces that were long lasting.

"As you grow up, you don't want as many disposable things in your life," she explains. "I think women naturally become more utilitarian, they throw out things they used to wear in their twenties and hang on to the pieces that really mean something." It's an idea that stuck with Erin during the design process. "I wanted it to have a bit of an edge but I definitely wanted to create something that felt timeless and fine at the same time," she says. While the price point might exceed what the original Low Luv customer could manage, the highly luxurious pieces (which launched last December) have a sophistication that speaks to the collector in Erin. The cool girl has certainly grown up, but her style is still a covetable as ever.
