Behind the Bella Hadid-approved Australian swim label
With the likes of Bella, Kylie and Hailey putting their orders in early, this is the homegrown swim label to know
At 28, Sydney-born designer Bianca Lane has already amassed a considerable celebrity following for her cult swimwear brand. Designed in Australia and realised in premium Italian lycra, the discreetly glamorous and sophisticated cuts have found favour with the style set's most discerning: Bella Hadid, Hailey Baldwin, Kylie Jenner, Ciara, Karlie Kloss and Ariana Grande, to name a few.
Here, the brand's founder talks to Divya Bala on inspiration, alter egos and seeing your designs on stage in front of 17,000 screaming fans.
How did the idea for Zigilane come about?
The idea of Zigilane was created while I was living in St. Tropez in the south of France. I sketched my first collection whilst I was there then came back home to Sydney Australia to officially get started. The name was kind of for an "alter ego" which I named 'Zigi' and then I used my last name 'Lane'. I also just really wanted to create a brand that showcased the finest quality craftsmanship of swimwear. I didn't think there was anything out there on the market that combined elegance and modern edge.
What do you think sets the brand apart?
Zigilane is a brand that re-writes the rules of swimwear with cuts that compliment your shape and accentuate the womanly figure; but it also has the edge of street swag allowing women to bring their style to the water.
How do you approach a new collection?
I always start a collection with my mood board of just what I'm loving at the moment, and then it kind of speaks for itself as the overall vibe and style for the next collection. I figure out exactly what I want from there, and I also continue to keep going back to the mood board as inspiration.
What inspired the current collection?
Wet Suede Resort 17 is inspired by the grace and curves of the female figure. I wanted the collection to also seem effortlessly feminine but also have a chic modern vibe.
How do you see women wearing your pieces?
I design for a woman to feel confident, strong, and stylish, so I absolutely love when I see women styling the swimwear their own way. The idea of Zigilane is that you can wear the most stylish piece of swimwear in the water and then pull on a skirt and high heels for the night and wear it till the next morning.
Who was the first celebrity wearer for Zigilane?
The first celebrity was Ariana Grande , who wore " The Little Black Dress " on stage her world tour in London in the Ziggy dome. I must say I felt pretty honored, an couldn't wipe the smile of my face when I watched her slay on stage in my swimwear in front of 17,000 people.
Who are some of your favourite wearers so far?
Some of my favs woud have to be Bella Hadid , Kylie Jenner, and of course Hayley Baldwin . Honestly its surprising to me that these celebs love the label so much, that they request the new season before it has even landed...That's CRAZY!
Is there anyone you'd love to dress but haven't yet?
Yes for sure! I want to dress RiRi.. I would kinda die. She is the ultimate muse for Zigilane at the moment.
What are you most excited about for the year ahead with the brand?
I've hit the milestones of getting my swim in major US stores and on the bodies of some of the most iconic girls right now so I guess I'm just excited to explore the brand more mainstream, to blow up in the US, to show Aussie girls that they are not limited in their dreams. Currently we are setting up a second base in the states which is just one step closer to Zigilane take over! But the rest is still to be written but I can assure you it's a story that you'll want to follow. Stay tuned...
