We take a look at the one-time Barney & Friends sidekick and her journey from child star to most followed person on Instagram
You've got to hand it to Selena Gomez. She's packed a lotta drama into her 24 years. The Texan native might have got a squeaky clean start on shows like Barney & Friends and Disney's Wizards of Waverley Place, but by the time she was in her late teens she'd traded television for the starry lights of pop music and feature films. Dating fellow musicians like Nick Jonas, then infamously moving on to Justin Bieber, ensured that Selena's love life was also rarely out of the spotlight.
While known for her love of a cute mini and the occasional ballgown, Selena's baby face and cherubic-girlie looks took a while to catch up. Perhaps it was around the time Selena made the eyebrow-raising move to star in Harmony Korine's schoolgirls-gone-wild flick Spring Breakers, but eventually the world stopped seeing Selena as a Disney princess. Add to that a solo album, Stars Dance that included the memorably come-hither track 'Come & Get It' and you could say that Miss Gomez' journey from tween to adult was near complete.
These days, Taylor Swift's bestie (who enjoys top-dog status in the girl squad) is enjoying her newfound single status and the sudden embracement from high fashion influencers like Louis Vuitton's Nicolas Ghesquière and Balmain's Olivier Rousteing. While #lifegoals might be complete for some, Selena wasn't quite done yet. After a highly publicised weight gain last year, she recently revealed it was due to the autoimmune disease lupus, confessing that she'd even undergone chemo to treat it. Putting the body shamers to, er, shame, Selena's raunchy black and white nude cover of her new album Revival (inspired by her hero Jennifer Aniston), coupled with not one, but three Vogue covers under her belt, looks set to prove once and for all that Selena Gomez is one fashionably connected, all-grown-up pop star.
Oh, and did we mention she's not only the most followed person on Instagram - she's now the first one to crack 100 million followers. Talk about kicking goals. All this, despite taking a break from her tour earlier this month due to the "anxiety, panic attacks and depression" which are side effects of lupus. "I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off," she told People.
Above, for your perusal, we track how her style (and social circle) has evolved over the years.
