Must love dogs

How to choose the perfect campaign star (and yes, it might have four legs)

Today Coach, the buzzy American accessories brand helmed by It-bag maker Stuart Vevers, revealed its Autumn campaign. Shot by Steven Meisel it stars a fresh-faced dark-eyed beauty. She's in a pearl necklace, and carries a deep purple tote. Her name? Miss Asia Kinney. She's Lady Gaga's dog.

The official line from Coach is that the campaign, which launches in July and will feature a bunch more as-yet unnamed canines (watch this space), "celebrates the dogs in our lives and captures the pups' unique personalities as they 'model' Coach's Fall 2015 star bags." There is precedent - said Vevers: "We were inspired by some images from the Coach archive, which featured Eddie-the dog that starred in the TV series Frasier-to create something joyful, with humor and character." But it's also a savvy social media marketing strategy.

As if that wasn't enough four-legged brilliance for one week, you may be aware that Marc Jacobs's dog Neville is the face of his fabulous bookshop Bookmarc; he appeared on Spring billboards bent studiously over a hefty tome, in a cravat and reading glasses. Neville's new campaign has just been unleashed (sorry) - it shows him reading to an avid audience of fellow mutts. All of which is genius. I mean, who doesn't love dogs?

Well, apart from cat people. Alas, they will have to hold out for a new Choupette collection for Shu Uemura, or content themselves reminiscing over that time Grumpy Cat did the spoof Prada campaign. I guess there's always the Cartier leopard.

In January when that glorious Joan Didion for Céline campaign dropped, there followed a flurry of stories about how the judiciously chosen star might break the internet (to use Kim-Kardashian-for-Paper speak). As brands jostle to book the biggest influencers, Justin Bieber for Calvin Klein, Gigi Hadid for Seafolly or Kendall Jenner for, um, everyone, make perfect sense.

But how to top the mighty Cher in Marc Jacobs for a talking point? Quick, call her agent - maybe she has a dog?

Who's who in the zoo?

Miss Asia Kinney - Gaga's pooch. Check out her Instagram to see her fashionable life, from reading Italian Vogue to enjoying champagne picnics. Shares an agent with mummy.

Bodhi the Menswear Dog - this dingo-like Shiba Inu is a classic dressing fan who claims to be "the most stylish dog in the world", and might just be that. Has appeared in The New York Times modelling summer looks. Bodhi's human used to work for Ralph Lauren.

Choupette - Kaiser Karl's cat has written a book, launched a makeup line with Shu Uemura, and in March made the cover of Lucky magazine.

Toast - this pretty King Charles spaniel may belong to, ahem, live with, The Fat Jewish, but she's a player in her own right, having starred in Karen Walker's last eyewear campaign.

Neville Jacobs - Marc's dog. Woof, I mean nuff, said.

Remix the Dog - Toronto-based furry gentleman rarely seen without his glasses. Has a hipster beard. Was featured on Mr Porter in March.

Bruce Weber's golden retriever gang - establishment stars, they've graced countless editorials, been the subject of a doco (2004's A Letter to True) and partnered with Shinola for a range of chic dog accessories. In 2009 they shot a Moncler ad in custom made down jackets.
