Pool party: Karen Walker’s bold new eyewear collection

Site: Yeong Sassall

You know summer's on its way when a fresh wave of sunglasses starts hitting stores

Just like the winter coat you've been faithfully wearing for the past three months, spring/summer's staple is undoubtedly a pair of shades. And while there's nothing wrong with last year's pair, per se, there's nothing that feels fresher than updating your sunglasses for a new season.

If there's a label that manages to nail the sunglasses category time and time again, it's New Zealand designer Karen Walker. Her bold, expressive and always flattering frames are a cult hit worldwide, worn by famous faces as diverse as Beyoncé, Scarlett Johansson, Alexa Chung and Lena Dunham. And as anyone who's owned a pair of KW sunnies before will tell you - they're as comfy and durable as a warm overcoat - minus the price tag.

While Walker brings out new iterations of her classic styles every season (thus satisfying our thirst for something new), her latest Resort collection, titled 'Poolside' is a colourful new step forward for the brand. Inspired by the'60s-era Hollywood swimming pool paintings by British artist David Hockney, Walker's latest range and campaign references the watery depths, aqua blue skies and peachy pastels of Hockney's artworks. Fun fact: the bright and pop-tastic campaign was shot by James Lowe, the other half of Kiwi singing sensation Lorde.

Decked out with either sheer powder blue or reflective electric blue lenses, plus two-toned frames and gold accents; each pair of frames comes in Karen Walker's signature quirky shapes and are the perfect blend of oversized '60s style with a more modern finish. If you ask us, they're the perfect excuse for a mini spring splurge.

The Karen Walker Poolside resort collection is in stores now and online. Prices start from $295 a pair.
