When high fashion houses like Prada and Dior start producing them and names like Riccardo Tisci and Kanye West join forces with Nike and Adidas, is there anything left to do to the humble sneaker? Yes, says Japanese design start-up No New Folk, who have harnessed the latest in lighting innovation  to make the sports shoe glow.

Called Orphe,  the smart shoe system is designed for performance artists and dancers to highlight their phsyical feats - literally. Hundreds of programmable LED lights are installed around the sneaker outsole, enabling them to light up, pulse, flash and strobe in different colours. The system is fully controlled via Bluetooth once you've downloaded the app, allowing the wearer to coordinate their light show to suit their movements.

The one hitch? At this stage No New Folk are relying on crowd funding to finance production. To find out how you can support the project - and hopefully get your hands on a pair - visit Indiegogo and stay tuned.
