Anyone who's ever watched a Terence Malick film will know that it's an experience that will either a. leave you blissfully enchanted  or b. thoroughly pissed that you wasted two hours of your life on a movie that had no plotline. The director's visions are famously so opaque, it's said that even Christian Bale didn't know what the hell Knight of Cups (Malik's last film) was about - and he was the star of the film. So let this be a word of warning to anyone planning to see Song to Song.

The new trailer dropped a few of days ago and cast (featuring two 2017 Oscar nominees) and the premise alone already has us hanging out to see this movie. Set in the live gig wonderland of the Austin, Texas music scene, Song to Song features a pair of scruffy, charismatic musos played by Rooney Mara and Ryan Gosling whose love story may or may not be disrupted by Michael Fassbender. Could there be a more compelling love triangle?

Add to the cast a blonde Natalie Portman as a pretty waitress type, Ryan Gosling singing Del Shannon's 'Runaway' and a whole lot of typically Malick-ish camera angles and dreamy voiceovers - and you can see why we're intrigued. With appearances by Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, Florence Welch, Lykke Li, Arcade Fire, Black Lips and The Red Hot Chili Peppers; plus Cate Blanchett, Christian Bale and Benicio Del Toro - it's catnip for any rock 'n' roll lover.

Interestingly, like other Malick films, music drama has taken a long time to see the light of day. Kicking around in post-production for the last four years, it will finally make its debut at - where else? - SXSW on March 10. Watch the trailer below.
