The legend of Bowie never really dies… even on social media
It's been just over a month since the death of music legend, pop culture icon and provocateur David Bowie but already we've seen tributes from the public, every celebrity he ever met, and yes - even Lady Gaga at last week's Grammy Awards. But in terms of honouring his most recent creative output -his last album Blackstar - Instagram has gone and one upped them all.
An announcement from their Instaminiseries account this morning unveiled their latest project - UNBOUND - a series of 16 "visual interpretations" of the late musician's majestic swan song album. Taking a starring role in the series is Rookie founder Tavi Gevinson and American actress Patricia Clarkson. Set to send "the audience on a journey of evocative images inspired by the moods suggested in the album's music, lyrics and artwork," UNBOUND isn't to be accused of morbidly capitalising on the chart-topping album's inevitable success. As it turns out, Instagram were given pre-release access to Blackstar late last year by Bowie himself, with no "limits or preconditions on his part".
Considering all the hilarious anecdotes from musos like Bono, Dave Grohl and Coldplay, which highlight just how discerning Bowie's musical taste was - having no limits on how to interpret his music was pretty major for Instagram. While his tragic passing means Bowie will never be able to see his magnum opus come to life, you can watch it via the @instaminiseries account from February 25.
