Is this the end of the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard saga?
The Buro daily
Divorce in Hollywood is never a pretty affair, but the Amber Heard/Johnny Depp case was one of the rarer cases we've seen in a while. On May 30, accusations of domestic violence from Heard's camp rocked the world, as media struggled to articulate their reaction to the shocking claims against one of Hollywood's A-list. And of course, Depp's lawyers came out swinging, calling heard and liar and readying themselves to battle it out in court.
But in a surprising move, the case has been settled ahead of the trial, with Amber set to receive a US$7m divorce settlement. She has also withdrawn her application for a domestic violence restraining order and says she will donate proceeds from the divorce for charity. The estranged couple released this joint statement:
Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love. Neither party has lied nor made false accusations for financial gain. There was never any intent of physical or emotional harm. Amber wishes the best for Johnny in the future. Amber will be donating financial proceeds from the divorce to a charity. There will be no further public statements about this matter.
It's especially interesting timing, given the sordid details of the couple's marriage that have started to leak to the press. Just yesterday TMZ, published details of a fight between the couple in Australia where Johnny smeared a bloody fingertip across a window, and reported other footage of the two fighting. To say it was ugly is the understatement of the year. While both camps say they had witnesses and evidence, Depp's lawyers maintained Heard was lying and seeking to blackmail him; while Heard's legal team argued that the Pirates of the Caribbean star had drug and alcohol abuse issues as well as a violent temper. Up until this morning, it was shaping up to be an epic trial by media.
We guess TMZ and the rest of the world's gossip rags will have to focus on another celeb break-up now.
