Did Paris Hilton really invent the selfie? Let's examine the evidence
On November 19, 2006 Paris Hilton found herself in position that many of us can now relate to; wanting to get a photo with her bestie, but not having someone around to take it (we can only assume that her former assistant, Kim Kardashian was busy organising Paris' closet at the time). Hilton did what no other had done before; extended her right arm, turned the camera around and tilted her head (to make sure it was in frame, obviously) then *click*. And so became the world's very first selfie... at least according to Paris Hilton.
The reality star/socialite/hotel heiress commemorated the moment, sharing two side-by-side selfies of herself alongside pal, Britney Spears with the caption: "11 years ago today, Me & Britney invented the selfie!" One of the photos shows the two blondes donning matching pairs of Playboy bunny ears, because 2006.
This isn't the first time Hilton has taken credit for inventing the selfie phenomenon. Speaking to W Magazine earlier this year she said: "If a beeper had a camera, I would have taken a selfie with it... I think I have a selfie from when I was a little kid, like on a disposable camera."
The internet, of course had some things to say, picking Hilton up on her historical inaccuracy by sharing photos of selfies that pre-date the aforementioned Paris and Britney pic. One user shared a picture of Bill Nye (yep, the science guy) nailing a selfie back in 1999, and another shared what could perhaps be the first tourist selfie (pre-selfie stick, of course) of George Harrison outside the Taj Mahal. Then came selfies from Astrid Kirchherr and Paul McCartney in the 1960s, followed by the somewhat hilarious 1910 mirror selfies. It turns out, the first ever selfie was by Robert Cornelius in 1839, a photograph that was taken even earlier than the self-portrait oil paintings by Vincent Van Gough.
So technically Paris Hilton just took a selfie and shared it eleven years later, which on its own is not a feat; but the addition of bestie, Britney Spears and Playboy bunny ears make for a worthwhile throwback. Can you name a more iconic duo? I'll wait.
