Dissecting Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s first public appearance post-wedding
Her dress broke the Internet
For a newly married couple, stepping out for the first time together is usually a pretty low-key affair. Gone is the tightly styled wedding hair, perfect make-up and impeccably dressed bride and groom, in its place is a loved-up, relaxed duo dressed in casual resort wear, ready for a honeymoon in a dreamy tropical destination.
However, if you're the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the narrative doesn't quite follow that line. Instead, your first public appearance is at a public event honouring the first-in-line to the British throne, who also happens to be the groom's father and the bride's new father-in-law. Such is life when you're a member of the royal family.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex delayed their honeymoon to attend the Prince of Wales's 70th birthday celebration - a garden party held at Buckingham Palace - which marked their first public appearance post-wedding.
Of course, their appearance broke the Internet thanks to the so-called 'Meghan Effect'. For anyone who missed it, the 'Meghan Effect' is the effect Markle has on an item of fashion. As soon as Markle wears something, anything really, the item immediately becomes the hottest must-have fashion piece, swiftly selling out and in the process usually crashing the brand's site due to the overwhelming number of people desperate to dress just like The Duchess.
Which is exactly what occurred when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle attended Prince Charles's party. For her first public appearance as Prince Harry's wife, Markle wore a dusty pink dress from British label Goat, which according to reports, sold out overnight and crashed Goat's website.
Prince Harry wore a morning suit to the celebration, but let's be honest, no one was terribly interested in who or what The Duke was wearing.
Aside from the fashion, the couple looked relaxed, loved-up and so happy, laughing and chatting comfortably with the other members of the royal family.
