In what is one of the most impressive feats of stealth-marriage in recent times, Australian actress Margot Robbie has married her long-term boyfriend Tom Ackerley in the Byron hinterland yesterday, with the Wolf of Wall Street star remaining schtum about the status of her relationship with Ackerley, amidst rumours of an engagement that persisted all year. The couple met on the set of film Suite Francaise in 2013 for which Ackerley was an assistant director and Robbie played a supporting role. Last week, the couple arrived in Australia with Robbie wearing a shirt that read, "Say 'I Do' Down Under", a slogan for the marriage-equality movement that also, in hindsight, hinted at what was to come.
"We were friends for so long," explained Robbie of Ackerley in an interview with Vogue in May. "I was always in love with him but I thought, 'Oh, he would never love me back. Don't make it weird, Margot. Don't be stupid and tell him that you like him." She continued, "And then it happened, and I was like, 'Of course we're together. This makes so much sense, the way nothing has ever made sense before.'"
Friends of the couple posted images to Instagram that hinted at the wedding's location of Harvest in the village of Newrybar near Byron Bay.
