We're just under two weeks into 2017 and already one of the year's biggest power pairings seems to have arrived. Coming to our attention the way most newly hatched celeb romances do - via some grainy, low res. paparazzi shots - we woke up this morning to news that Selena Gomez and The Weeknd appear to be dating.
Taking their dalliance public outside LA Italian restaurant Giorgio Baldi, the world's most followed Instagram girl and the 'Starboy' singer (real name Abel Tesfaye) were pretty happy to show PDA in front of photographers. Considering that The Weeknd broke up with Bella Hadid just a couple of months ago, we'd say this was pretty ballsy. Although it makes one wonder how long this has been going on in secret?
In fact, E!News reports that The Weeknd has had his eye on Selena for a while. "[He's] always had a thing for Selena," a source shared. "He thinks she is extremely talented and sexy. They recently started talking before the holidays but she has been on his radar before. They are on the same level with expectations and think the other is really fun. They are taking things slow and getting to know each other."
Although considering how small the LA celeb scene is, we have no doubt Bella would know about this, since sister Gigi is a fully fledged member of Taylor Swift's girl squad and Taylor and Selena Gomez are longtime BFFs. So even though Selena and Bella may not be besties, they definitely have mutual friends and they have definitely hung out before, as this picture (below) on Immy Waterhouse's Twitter feed proves. And, in news just in, it looks like we might have our answer: Bella has reportedly just unfollowed Selena on Instagram. We wonder if she'll choose to address it publicly?
But, famous, exes aside, we can see how The Weeknd and Selena might have happened. After both performing at the same Victoria Secret show in 2015, the two singers would probably run in similar circles. Add to that, they're both musicians - even though Selena is a pure pop princess and The Weeknd's specialty is dark-tinged R&B, his output has taken a turn for the mainstream in his last two albums - even despite working with cool kids like Daft Punk and Lana Del Rey. Is it too early to call for a duet? Although considering how well that turned out for Taylor Swift and ex Calvin Harris, maybe it's best leaving the romance out of the recording studio...
We can't wait to see how this unfolds. Your move, Bella.
