Say Lou Lou are known for their directional sartorial style as much as their music, and it looks like we can expect big things from both before the year is out. Speaking on the eve of the launch of the S/S '16 edition of 1891, the Strand Arcade's biannual fashion tome, Miranda and Elektra Kilbey reveal the secrets behind their creative process, why they love Australian fashion and give a few clues as to what to expect from their next album.
Tell us how your creative process works? Brainstorming references and inspirations, whether it be music, film, conversations, places, finding a lead into the song; a lyric, a sound, a melody and following where it takes us.
How did working with the Strand Arcade retailers on 1891 Volume 05 inspire you creatively? It was fun to see so many different creators, in everything from food to clothes to skincare come together under one aesthetic idea.
How has Australian fashion influenced your style? Australian fashion to us will always be a sense of bohemia and nature, being comfortable and dressing for the weather.
When can we expect to see the release of your second album? New music will definitely be out late this year, or early next year, though we're yet to decide whether it will be another album or an EP.
Where would you like to take SLL musically in the future? We want to take Say Lou Lou into a new world sonically, going a bit harder, groovier and perhaps a little psychedelic; changing the vocal production and introducing a stronger sense of directness.
The Strand is celebrating 125 years with a lavish balloon installation, food pop-ups, whisky tasting stations and designer appearances from August 25.27. 1891 Volume 07 launches on August 25.
