For a good chunk of Miley Cyrus' career, her name was not only synonymous with the crazy, the kooky, the kawaii, but also with smoking weed.  Her social media was often rite with #420 tags, her costumes would be decorated with marijuana leaves, her live show even featured a giant, dancing blunt and she famously blazed one up at the EMAs in 2013.  For a good four to five years, Cyrus' biggest accessory was, more often than not, a joint. Until recently.

Miley Cyrus reveals why she’s given up marijuana

Doing the round to promote her new single "Malibu", Cyrus has been quite candid about her decision to quit smoking.  Last month, she appeared on the cover of Billboard (shoot pictured above) and revealed that she was for the first time, completely clean. "I haven't smoked weed in three weeks, which is the longest I've ever [gone without it]," she said. "I'm not doing drugs, I'm not drinking, I'm completely clean right now! That was just something that I wanted to do." She also said in the interview that it had to be her decision if it was going to work.  "But if anyone told me not to smoke, I would have not done it," she added. "It's because it was on my time. I know exactly where I am right now."

Now, she has dug deeper into why in an interview with Jimmy Fallow, citing his influence in a round-about way. "I've always been very stoned on your shows. I don't know if you know this, everybody," she said in an appearance this week on Fallon's The Tonight Show. "'Member the last time I was here? I was dressed as a bunny rabbit and then like a cat. There's a reason for that: I was high."

True, this we can understand. But it actually goes deeper: Cyrus admits she had to do it for her own mental health as much as her music, citing a permanent state of paranoia and fuzziness she couldn't shake. "I kept having this nightmare... I had a dream that I would die during my monologue on SNL for some reason, that I would just get so stoned that I would die -which I've googled and that's never happened! But kept having this nightmare....It's like, nobody's ever died from smoking weed, but nobody's smoked as much as I did."  She goes onto say she wanted to be clear, smart, concise and direct about what she's been working on.  As well as crack a joke about how she was just blazing, eating and spending too much time with her pets and "not really doing anything."

"I'm actually the most passionate about what I'm doing with this record than I've been - I say this every time, but I loved making this record so, so much," she said. "And this record at this moment is the most important album that I've ever made. So I wanted to make sure that I was super clear in the way I'm talking."
