Life on the road with MS MR’s Lizzy Plapinger
Ever since MS MR bust onto the scene with the affecting 'Hurricane' followed by their 2013 debut LP, Secondhand Rapture, they've been a mainstay of the world's foremost festivals (think: Coachella, Bonnaroo, Glastonbury and Splendour in the Grass). Armed with the haunting and husky vocals of lead singer Lizzy Plapinger and the production talents of Max Hershenow, this New York-bred indie electronica duo have returned to Australia for Groovin the Moo (on now), as well as four sideshows in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.
We grabbed Lizzy for a quick chat to talk touring, new music and what's on her must-see list for Australia.
Your second album, How Does it Feel, launched last year and you've been touring non-stop. Are you ready to jump in the studio and work on some new stuff?
We worked so hard on this most recent record that for us it's about spending as much time as we can bringing people's attention to it! We write a little on the road as an outlet but really the live side of things is our focus for right now.
You've been to Australia many times to tour - do you have any favourite places you want to return to?
We absolutely love Australia and we're so lucky we've been able to visit and tour as many times as we have. We love Sydney and always hit up Zoo Emporium Vintage. When we're in Perth we hit up Rottnest [Island]. When we're in Melbourne we like to hang around Brunswick Street.
I imagine touring for a festival is a lot of fun because you get to hang out with other musicians. Do you have any friends on tour with you this time?
It's definitely one of the best parts of playing a festival like this one. When we were in Australia a few years ago for Laneway, we ended up becomes great friends with Jessie Ware, The Nbhd (The Neighbourhood) and Pond. There are so many new faces on the GTM run that we're hoping to come away with some new friends.
Aside from your own, which Groovin' the Moo set are you most pumped to see and why?
Ratatat! We've been fans for so long and have never seen [them] live. They're one of our favourite bands from college.
There's a fair few Australian musicians on the GTM lineup - Emma Louise, Jarryd James, SAFIA, The Rubens, Illy- are you familiar with everyone on the lineup or are you still discovering their music?
We're familiar with Jarryd James because he toured with our friend Tove Lo (and we love his song 'Do You Remember'). We met The Rubens when we did Laneway together but for the most part we're excited to be introduced to some new music.
Do you listen to much music on the road? What's on your current playlist?
We listen to a lot of music on the road, it's really the only way to get through all the travel and maintain sanity. Recently been listening to the new Deerhunter record, [Fading Frontier], which I love!
Lizzy, you've got a knack for picking some awesome costumes to perform in, both on stage and in your music videos. Where do you get your style inspiration from?
I absolutely ADORE clothes/fashion and vintage specifically. I love seeking out local thrift stores while I'm on the road because it's such a great opportunity to put outfits together that no one else could! I like to stand apart and hope my style feels wholly unique to me.
