In the music business selling records and going platinum is a goal, but scoring a Grammy Award is the goal. It's the ultimate seal of industry approval with the voting members of the Recording Academy (the organisation behind the Grammys) coming from within the music biz.

And this year as with anything music-related the 60th Grammy Award nominations are littered with casualties, drama, unexpected surprises and one name that dominates.

The casualties include the surprise snub of ex-1Der Harry Styles whose self titled album debuted in the number spot on the Billboard 200 album chart, went platinum in a number of countries (including Australia) and yet failed to receive a nomination.

And then there's Ed Sheeran - surely his album ÷ (Divide) which debuted at number one in multiple markets and held the top position for weeks deserved a 'record of the year' nomination? It did get a nom in the 'pop' category, but still.

As for unexpected entrants, Bernie Sanders - the former US Presidential hopeful made the nominee list in the 'spoken word' category for his political campaign memoir Our Revolution: A Future to Believe. He's up against some heavy hitting celebs in that category with the late Carrie Fisher also nominated for her memoir The Princess Diarist and Bruce Springsteen for this biography Born to Run.

Who dominated the nominations? There's only one name: Jay-Z.
