The ARIA awards were once an annual celebration of all the good things coming out of the Australian music industry. While the awards still commemorate Australia's best musical talents, in the past two years the ARIAs have become a platform for artists to highlight deeply political and personal issues to the wider audience of Australia. Speeches have shifted from obligatory acknowledgements of mothers and managers and moved towards things that matterLast years' awards saw major political statements from Montaigne and Flume over the Keep Sydney Open campaign, among speeches from Kylie Minogue and Troye Sivan over marriage equality in Australia (both of which are still major societal movements). This year the focus moved to our nations' indigenous and our collective status as a nation of refugees, following triple j's decision to move their iconic Hottest 100 countdown to the day after Australia Day.

The awards also saw an international performance from critically acclaimed dad-dancer, Harry Styles, the crowning of a national icon and the public voted Apple Music Song of the Year. Click through the gallery above for the top 6 major moments from the 2017 ARIA awards.
