Based on the fictional novel by Japanese author Shusaku Endo of the same name, Silence is set in the 17th Century and tells the story of two Portuguese Jesuit priests, played by Spider Man Andrew Garfield and Star Wars' Adam Driver, sent on a dangerous mission to Japan to track down their mentor, Father Ferriera (Hollywood heavyweight Liam Neeson) and investigate the truth behind rumours Ferriera has renounced his faith. With Christians being persecuted and hunted down in Japan, the mission is fraught from the minute they leave the fold.

Shot with signature Scorsese intensity, the Silence trailer showcases the compelling dramatic film-making style Scorsese has built his award-winning career around via gritty cinematic masterpieces like The Wolf of Wall Street, The Departed, Goodfellas and Gangs of New York. And with the trifecta of danger, soul-searching and religion in play here, the gospel according to Scorsese is set to be must-see summer viewing.

Silence will be in cinemas December 22.
