Guillermo del Toro's film about a mute lady who falls in love with an aquatic monster, The Shape of Water, continued its awards streak with an epic 13 Oscar nominations including best picture and director. The other films leading the pack are Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which scored a very solid seven nominations and Christopher Nolan's stunningly shot war film Dunkirk, which nabbed eight.

Daniel Day Lewis' final movie before he retires from acting, The Phantom Thread also featured heavily with nominations for best picture, best lead actor, best supporting actress, best director, original score and costume design.

Jordan Peel's horror comedy Get Out also scored a slew of noms including best picture, best director, best original screenplay and best lead actor for Daniel Kaluuya.  Legendary Denzel Washington is also in the running for best actor, quashing any #oscarssowhite criticism.

Aussie star Margot Robbie scored her first Oscar nomination for her role as US figure skater Tonya Harding in I, Tonya. Allison Janey won the best supporting actress Golden Globe for playing Robbie's mother in the film and is now up for a best supporting actress Oscar for the role.

Speaking of talented females, Greta Gerwig scored a best director nom for her coming-of-age film Lady Bird, which is also up for best picture, best lead actress, best supporting actress and best original screenplay.

And over in young Hollywood, 22-year-old Timothée Chalomet has been nominated for a best lead actor for his break out role in romantic coming-of-age drama Call Me by Your Name.

Notably absent from the best actor category was James Franco who up until a few weeks ago was considered a shoe-in for his role in the Disaster Artist. No confirmation on why he was left off the list but the recent allegations of sexual misconduct leveled against him surely hurt his standing with Academy voters.
