Although the air date for season 8 of everyone's favourite fantasy drama show is still not confirmed, atleast fans can relax in the knowledge that, like winter, it's definitely coming with Vanity Fair reporting production has finally commenced with cast and crew back on location in Ireland.

According to Vanity Fair fans have so far spotted the following cast members on set: Kristofer Hivju (Tormund Giantsbane), Ben Crompton (Edd Tollett), John Bradley (Sam Tarly), plus all the main players including Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark), Maisie Williams (Arya Stark), Kit Harington (Jon Snow), Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen), and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister).

Notably at the end of season 7 it looked like Kristofer Hivju's character died when the wall crumbled under dragon fire - but his presence on set says otherwise which bodes well for the other characters who were on the wall when it fell and at the time, didn't look likely to make an appearance in the final season.

The Hivju sighting is also surprising given how ruthless the scriptwriters are when killing characters off - they have no problem getting rid of main characters or fan favourites which has turned out to be a very effective dramatic tension tool to keep viewers glued to their screens.

Game of Thrones season 7: the wall falls

As for what season 8 will bring, it's anyone's guess at this stage (even the actors don't know what to expect) - the plot is such a closely guarded secret with Vanity Fair reporting that in light of the HBO hack earlier this year, "even more secrecy precautions are being taken."

Hey ‘Game of Thrones’ fans, guess who’s back on set?
