It's no secret that it has been a trying time for women in the entertainment industry for the better part of the past 70 years; what with the gender pay gap, unequal representation and unfair acknowledgement  (such as the fact that not one female director was nominated for a 2018 Golden Globe). And of course, the elephant in the room that in 2017 everyone decided to finally talk about: the disturbing frequency of sexual misconduct by powerful men.

The Screen Actors Guild is ready to change this, starting with the 2018 SAG Awards. Kristen Bell will host the ceremony; a first for the awards, not because she is a woman, but because the SAG Awards have never had an MC. Speaking to the New York Times Bell said: "I'm not the first female host. I'm the first host. The fact that a female was chosen to be the first one means my genitals become irrelevant."

The nominations were announced overnight by actresses, Olivia Munn and Niecy Nash, and all 13 acting awards will be presented by women on the night. "I feel pretty strongly about the women's movement," SAG Awards executive producer, Kathy Connell told the New York Times. "Women stepped forward in such a huge way in this last year."

As for the nominations, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri holds the most nominations in the film category, walking away with four in total including best cast in a motion picture. Female directed Lady Bird nips at its heels with three nominations in total.

In television, Netflix comedy GLOW is the frontrunner with four nominations. Big Little Lies actresses Laura Dern, Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon all received nominations for outstanding performance in a mini-series, and rising star Millie Bobby Brown received a nomination for outstanding performance in a drama series.
