Silicon Valley has a lot to answer for, especially if you're a Hollywood writer. While cautionary tales about the decline of society thanks to technology are nothing new (George Orwell's 1984 was published in 1949, after all), but in recent times this growing unease with the power of tech companies and surveillance organisations is starting to loom large. The excellent Snowden is a recent example, but the latest tech-giant-gone-bad drama The Circle takes things further by moving the intrigue to the centre of Silicon Valley.

With Emma Watson playing the role of young tech ingénue Mae Holland, John Boyega as her colleague Kalden and Tom Hanks as the charismatic Steve Jobs-eque stand-in Bailey, The Circle makes the internet's obsession with cataloguing the world seem very creepy indeed. Based on the 2013 novel of the same name by US writer Dave Eggers, we're thinking maybe don't watch this if you're nervous about online surveillance...

The Circle has a US release date of April 28, 2017 but no Australian date yet. Watch this space for updates.
