Are mermaids having a mini pop culture moment? It certainly seems that way, with Disney rebooting every little girl's favourite singalong The Little Mermaid, an American cable channel creating new series The Deep, Danish director Agnieszka Smoczynska showing vampire-mermaid musical The Lure at this year's Sydney Film Festival, and the existence of the hilarious Mermaid Swimming Academy in the Philippines. So now, we guess it was only a matter of time until Channing Tatum got in on the action. The Magic Mike actor is attached to a remake of the 1984 romantic comedy Splash, which starred a young Tom Hanks as a dude who falls in love with a mermaid played by Daryl Hannah.

Of course, this being 2016 and all, Hollywood are keen to switch things up, so in the remake, Channing will star as the mermaid, ahem, sorry merman, with 22 Jump Street's Jillian Bell also attached to the Disney project. Details are scarce, but Variety reports that the original film's producers - Brian Grazer and Ron Howard (who also directed) - are back on board to produce. It's been a whole 32 years since the film was made, so we can only imagine they had to spice things up for 2016.

Personally, we can't wait to see Channing Tatum in a tail. Cue the Zoolander "Merman!" references...
