‘Big Little Lies’ season 2: everything we know so far
Rumours and truths
Yes Reese yes! In the most concrete sign HBO's Emmy-winning mini series Big Little Lies will be coming back for round two, Variety reports Reese Witherspoon - star and executive producer of the show - has pulled out of starring in and producing space film Pale Blue Dot which, per Variety was scheduled to begin filming early next year conflicting with the rumoured production kick off for Big Little Lies season 2.
The dark HBO drama based on Australian author Liane Moriarty's best-selling novel of the same name was one of the must-watch shows of 2017. The twisted story of what goes on behind closed doors in the seemingly idyllic community of Monterey, California sparked Game of Thrones-level fandom with the Twittersphere melting down every week when a new episode aired revealing yet more depths of depravity in the small coastal town.
Like the book, the mini-series ended with the loose ends tied up and the mystery solved, however the series scored so many fans and the characters were so compelling (played by a star-studded cast including Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, Zoë Kravitz, Adam Scott, Alexander Skarsgård) there has been a strong campaign for a second season.
So far HBO hasn't confirmed a second season is going ahead but all signs point to yes, including a recent TVLine piece reporting HBO is rumoured to be "eyeing spring 2018 production" for the second season.
As for what the storyline of season 2 would be, speaking to ENews, author Liane Moriarty said, "The producers have asked me to see if I can come up with some ideas. I wouldn't write a new book but perhaps a new story and then we'll see what happens."
Another sign a second season is on the cards comes from the director's chair and the writers room. Big Little Lies season 1 was directed by Jean-Marc Vallée with the episodes written by TV legend David E. Kelley. Kelley is, according to Collider back on board saying he's, "...kicking around ideas," but Vallée was allegedly not keen on a second season and HBO is rumoured to be looking for a replacement director for season 2.
And finally, if we believe everything we see on social media (it's all true, right?), the main cast of the show, Reese, Nicole and Laura are all best buddies keen to get the band back together for another round of drama-filled Monterey action.
