What is it about kids gone wild that makes for such enthralling viewing? It's a subject that's ripe for endless films, books, and TV shows, and the focus for British filmmaker Andrea Arnold's latest flick. A winner of the Jury prize at this year's Cannes Film Festival American Honey focuses on 18 year old Star, played by up-and-coming star Sasha Lane, who is recruited by a couple, Krystal (Riley Keough) and Jake (Shia LaBeouf), who travel the country with a band of friends selling magazine subscriptions... and thieving from unsuspecting 'clients'.
Of course, a bit of a love triangle emerges, alongside a whole host of other mischief, but the expansive directorial style is being compared to other arthouse documenters of youth, such as Harmony Korine (Kids, Spring Breakers) and Gus Van Sant (Elephant, My Own Private Idaho). With partying, sex and stealing part of the deal, American Honey might be a film for this generation of slackers, misfits and loners, and coupled with an On the Road-style trip across America - we're betting it makes for addictive viewing. American Honey hits Australian cinemas on November 3.
