Premiering at the esteemed Toronto International Film Festival, the film stars home grown Oscar-winner Nicole Kidman, Slumdog Millionaire Dev Patel and Rooney Mara (The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo) and is generating serious Oscar-buzz both for the story and the acting. The plot follows five-year-old Saroo who gets lost on a train taking him thousands of kilometres across India, far far away from his family. He must learn to survive on his own before eventually being adopted by an Australian couple (Nicole plays his adopted mother). Fast-forward to twenty five years later, Saroo arms himself with Google Earth, a handful of memories and sets out to find his lost family. Here, four reasons why this is your next must-see movie:
#1. It's based on a remarkable true story. Who doesn't love a heartrending tale that actually happened? Adapted from the memoir A Long Way Home by Saroo Brierley, five-year-old Saroo is played by new face Sunny Pawar and adult Saroo by Dev Patel, who has just scored a Golden Globe nom for best supporting actor.
#2. Nicole Kidman. Our flame-haired Oscar-winner is always a compelling on-screen presence but word on the Hollywood street is her performance is beyond striking as Saroo's adoptive mother. She also just scored a Golden Globe nom for best supporting actress.
#3. It's generating serious Oscar buzz. For the true film buff no potential Oscar-winning film goes unseen and given that Lion just landed four Golden Globe nominations, including best picture, it's looking like a little gold statue might be heading Lion's way.
#4. To support Aussie films. Saroo's adoptive parents in the movie and real life are Australian, meaning this is essentially an Australian story.
