Sydney’s new space-saving hotel has a distinct Tokyo twist

Sydney has officially entered the space age with this budget-saving accommodation with a difference

There's a lot to love about boutique hotels but one of those things is definitely not their room rates. If you're anything like us, you left your hostel-staying days behind on that Barcelona trip you made at 19, and while Airbnb is great and all, one thing you can't match in a major hotel is location, location, location (ok, and maybe great service). That being said, there's definitely a dearth of CBD accommodation options that rank above a hostel and below a 5-star hotel - especially in a city as sinfully expensive as Sydney.

But that's all about to change. Taking a leaf out of Tokyo's famous pod hotels, Sydney has recently acquired its own version of a capsule hotel. Located in the guts of Sydney's CBD (640 George St, to be exact) The Capsule Hotel is a 70-bed boutique stay for the budget-conscious traveller who wants to be within walking distance to attractions like Hyde Park, the Opera House and Pitt St Mall. While admittedly, it's not the first pocket-sized hotel in Sydney (The Pod Sydney is another) and it's not exactly boasting Park Hyatt views, but the Capsule Hotel's surprisingly chic interior makes bunking up for the night seem kinda fun - as long as you're not claustrophobic, that is.

But really, how much time does one really spend in their hotel bed? With three options ranging from single bed front entrance, single bed side entrance and queen bed deluxe side entrance, each room comes fitted with a flat screen LCD TV, in-room safe, bed linen, mirror, A/C, headphone jack, USB port and locker. (We're told the TV screen gets bigger as you go up in quality). Add to that a communal kitchen, laundrette and shared bathrooms and you've got possibly one of the cheapest CBD sleepover options in Sydney.

Watch the video below for a quick tour of the space.

The Capsule Hotel is located on Level 3, 640 George Street, Sydney NSW 2000. Rooms start from $110/night for a single bed front entrance pod. For more info and to book, head to
