And they call Australia a nanny state... a new bill introduced by a member of the Democrats in New Jersey, Pamela Lampitt, could see walking while texting made illegal. Driving and using a phone has been illegal - and rightly so - across the world for years now, but Lampitt argues that distracted pedestrians pose just as much of a threat to drivers, as well as themselves.
The proposed bill would prohibit pedestrians from using smartphones while crossing public roads, CNBC reports. If passed, the legislation would see the crime incur similar penalties to jaywalking, including a fine and possible jail time. It may sound ridiculous, but as anyone who's ever run into something while scrolling their Instagram feed knows, there might be something to it.
