Netflix has a lot to answer for: according to this new study, just one sleepless night can damage your brain, dulling your memory and synaptic responses and increasing excitability (that explains your exhausted delirium).

Published in Nature Communications two days ago, the German study by University Medical Centre Freiburg compared the brain activity of 20 participants after a full night's sleep and a night of little sleep, reports. Participants with little sleep under-performed in word-pair memory and short-term memory tasks and their blood tests showed reduced levels of BDNF, a protein that regulates neuron communication. What's more, the strength of the pulse needed to stimulate a muscle response in the left hand was considerably lower when participants had had little sleep.

In other words, your Netflix binges are making you stupid. Stupid and over-excited. We're off to take a nap.

Pulled an all-nighter? This is what it's doing to your brain
