Home to perfectly understated, high-quality design, MUJI has inspired many a trip to Japan for its homewares, furniture, stationery and travel goods. The Japanese lifestyle retailer, which also stocks men's, women's and children's fashion, operates under a strict 'no brand' aesthetic - the name MUJI stems from Mujirushi Ryohin, which translates to 'no brand quality goods.'
Founded in 1980, MUJI launched in response to what the company's founders saw as Japanese consumers placing too much emphasis on brand name products. The concept took off, with the Sydney store bringing the global MUJI count to a grand total of 703, with yet more in the pipeline. There are already two stores in Melbourne's Chadstone Shopping Centre and Emporium.
The MUJI Sydney flagship store opens on May 14, with limited-edition gifts with purchase and special offers on the day. We're predicting queues.
