Surfing, skateboarding, sports climbing, karate, baseball and softball have been added to the program for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) came to a decision overnight.

The five sports, which will see 18 new events and 474 new athletes compete in the Games, have been chosen largely in a bid to attract younger audiences. The IOC's current plans propose that the climbing and skateboarding events take place in man-made, central city locations to reflect the urbanisation of sport and bring in a youth-dominated crowd.

Baseball and softball were part of the Olympics from 1992 to 2008, but were axed before London 2012.
