It's time you and your iPhone had a little talk - because those selfies you're taking? The world's seen enough. We know you've practically earnt a degree in Facetune and have mastered filter, saturation and brightness ratios to a tee (hey, we're right there with you), but it's time we all looked away from the lens and directed our attention at something other than ourselves.
Of course, not everyone's guilty, but if you tick any of these boxes, keep reading: have you A) uploaded pictures from a wedding you went to, none of which included the bride and all of which included you? B) Used your friend's birthday as an excuse to upload a years-old selfie of the two of you, where she looks average at best and you think you look skinny? Or C) Taken your Instagram cues from the Kardashians? Read on.

Cate Blanchett has some choice words for you. "I cannot for the life of me work out why adults are participating in that sh*t," she said in a recent interview with Yahoo. "People constantly are taking pictures of ourselves to send them to people to see if they like me, 'Do they like me?' It's pathetic, the whole thing about people worrying about what other people are going to think. I just can't handle it." But Blanchett isn't just criticising; she provides a useful alternative: "I'm not out there saying, 'Do they like the way I look'... You have to say, 'This is what I'm doing right now.'" It's a better social media strategy than Kim and Kylie ever came up with.
Yes, it's nice to know that people 'like' your bouncy fresh blow dry or ability to pout and fit a green juice into the frame at the same time, and there's nothing wrong with the occasional 'hello, world' selfie to show your followers who you are and what you look like (and we rule travel and special occasion selfies (like your own engagement, for instance) exempt, despite what Blanchett might think), but if selfies dominate your Insta-feed, it's time to reconsider. Try this ratio instead: for every food, view and social pic you post, allow yourself one selfie. Just one (really, we're being generous).
Otherwise, you risk associations with Socality Barbie (if you're not familiar with the pint-sized Insta-star, start following her now) and become the target of memes like the above. And if Instagram ever follows Facebook's lead and gets a 'dislike' button, well... you're in trouble.
