In the early afternoon in Paris, on Wednesday this week, five masked and armed robbers stole over approximately $6 million worth of jewellery from the Ritz hotel on Place Vendome.

The former home of Coco Chanel and the last residence of Princess Diana before her death in 1997 houses several boutiques within its famed walls.

With Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier and several other designer boutiques lining Paris' most famous square, the area has been targeted for armed jewellery heists in the past.

Of the five robbers who made the heist carrying handguns and hatchets, three were arrested while the remaining two fled the scene and police. Some of the jewellery has since been recovered in dropped bags and scattered after the arrests. There were no injuries.

The last high-profile jewellery heist in Paris was in October 2016, when jewellery worth 10 million euros was stolen from Kim Kardashian. Five men, some wearing jackets with police insignia, held her at gunpoint and stole several pieces of gold and diamond jewellery.
