Foodies take note: these are your new culinary crushes for 2017
The annual reveal of The World's 50 Best Restaurants is one of the most eagerly awaited, prestigious awards on the culinary calendar. This year's event was hosted in Melbourne, bringing some exciting focus to the Victorian capital as a gastronomical destination. While New York's Eleven Madison Park took out the honour of the top spot, marking it the first American eatery to do so since 2004, two Australian restaurants also made the list. Melbourne's Attica (no stranger to this list) was the highest ranked Aussie eatery on the list at 32, while regional Victoria's Brae in Birregurra was a new entry at number 44.
It's not all bad for Australia though: Sydney's Quay restaurant scored number 95 in the 51-100 rankings. And if you're looking for René Redzepi's highly regarded Noma on the top 50 - you won't find it. The Copenhagen restaurant is in the midst of a reopening, which made it ineligible for this year's list. The annual awards are based on a panel of around 1,500 food writers, chefs and restaurateurs and were announced in Melbourne last night.
