You might not know it (although if you've lived in Sydney long enough, you should), but that lesser-known gelateria on Crown Street produces some of the best gelato in the country - and we're talking Italy as well as Australia. The award-winning RivaReno is home to ridiculously creamy, authentically made Italian gelato, made on site in small batches daily and stored in 'pozzetti' - stainless steel cylinders - to keep it fresh.
This week, RivaReno opens shiny new digs at Barangaroo, all dark oak and Carrara marble, plus a new look for the original Darlinghurst store. They're expanding the menu to include waffles, bombolini (Italian doughnuts), crepes and Mecca coffee in addition to their 26 gelato flavours and four granitas.
A note on their gelato: you simply have not lived until you've tried their Cremino RivaReno - white chocolate and hazelnut ganache with layers of gianduia - which is basically homemade Italian Nutella. Or the Pistacchio Bronte, which uses rare Bronte pistachios that are only harvested every second year in the Sicilian town after which the gelato is named. This is gelato that's worth the extra calories.
