Occupying a petite space on Redfern's quiet achiever eat street, Regent Street, Happy D's is the brain child of mother-and-son Debra and Andrew Watts. The dumplings and booze bar sees Andrew front of house at the bar and Debra behind the scenes steaming the bamboo baskets in the kitchen. Which seems like a fairly sensible division of family labour given Debra ran a yum cha catering business, Yum Cha Catering, for over a decade and Andrew pulled ales at The Old Fitzroy Hotel.
As for the food, it's a mouth-watering line up of eight different fresh-made steamed and Cantonese style dumplings including all the usual suspects of chicken, mushroom and barbecue pork buns plus an unexpected cameo courtesy of a creative weekly special. To wash down the delish dumplings the beverage list covers all bases with on-tap Asahi, a selection of Japanese craft beers, sake and a few Aussie whites and reds. And if you're thinking of hitting Happy D's on the weekend between midday and 4pm skip breakfast and arrive hungry, they run a "Dumps 'n' Booze" special involving four fully loaded plates of piping hot dumplings plus a drink for $30. Which was probably what Pharrell Williams was thinking about when he penned his hit tune, Happy.
