If you're one of the many health conscious among us, whose annual Nutella consumption is limited to a cheeky handful of Ferrero Rochers at Christmas, a morsel of Doughnut Time's Love At First Bite or maybe a roadside Nutella crepe during your summer European vacation, then boy, do we have news for you. No longer confined to kids birthday parties and the naughty top shelf of your pantry, Nutella is staking a claim along the east coast of Australia in the form of a free Nutella truck. Yep, you heard right. Complimentary Nutella on wheels.
The #NutellaRoadTrip is a partnership between Sydney based food truck The Nighthawk Diner and the famous Italian confectioner Ferrero (who own Nutella). While not exactly the usual fare offered by The Nighthawk Diner (they usually favour American roadhouse-style eats), head chef and owner Alistair Fogg explains that it's all part of a grander plan to shed new light on the versatility of the hazelnut spread. "Nutella [is a] product that can lend itself to many morning food items, not just traditional toast," he says. "We've had a lot of fun developing the Nutella food truck menu - it was hard to stop at just six options!"
With brekkie items on the menu such as steeped mixed berries with Nutella and toasted coconut; mandarin segments with roasted hazelnuts and Nutella; fruit skewers and Nutella, pikelets with smashed banana and Nutella and (in case you were hoping - because we were) a crepe stack with Nutella and crispy bacon - the Nutella Road Trip is as much about bringing mouth-watering breakfast items to your locale as it is with inspiring you to get creative with the iconic spread. (Note: dipping your spoon directly into the jar is still perfectly acceptable behaviour in our books).
Those lucky enough to be living between Sydney and Melbourne can cheer the fact that the Nutella Road Trip kicks off today (June 15) in Sydney's Wynyard Park, then will head south, finishing up in Geelong on June 28. Nutella chasers would be well advised to look out for The Nighthawk Diner's signature black pickup truck and silver trailer (it's been decorated to resemble a giant toaster - natch).
