The Duke of Clarence is Sydney’s newest English-inspired pub

With all things royal happening this week (ahem, the engagement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle) comes another regal event to celebrate, and this one involves a lot of booze. While there is no shortage of Aussie pubs in Sydney, a good British booze house can be pretty hard to come by, until now.  The Duke of Clarence, a 19th century-inspired English tavern by Mikey Enright and Julian Train will open its doors next week, sitting in good company in the alleyway next to the duo's award-winning bar The Barber Shop.

Named after the young aristocrat who went on to become King William IV, The Duke of Clarence sets out to offer a quintessentially British experience.  At the heart of the fine establishment are of course the drinks, which much like our British monarchy are served long and strong with a kick of drama. The entire cocktail list is a playful nod to Great Britain - Enright's pick is 'The Clarence House Gibson'; a twist on the Gibson martini with Bombay Sapphire, dry sherry, rosemary smoked sea salt, pickled onion distillate and brine.

The venue was deigned in collaboration with UK set designer Sara Mathers (Moulin Rouge, Ned Kelly) with the aim for the interiors to appear as authentically English as possible. Furniture was sourced from pubs, churches and warehouses around England and shipped across the Indian Ocean to the Commonwealth down-under.

The food offering is just as British; think potted crab with soda bread and butter; the classic scotch egg with hot English mustard; and come early 2018, the pub will be open for lunch serving Sunday roasts. You can almost hear the roars of excitement from all the English expats.  

The Duke of Clarence opens Monday December 4.
