As of Monday, you can (provided you BYO actual cooking skills): the blokes behind Porteño, Bodega and Gardel's Bar, Joe Valore and Elvis Abrahanowicz, are opening their hotly anticipated Continental Deli & Bistro on Monday September 28, on Australia St, Newtown.
The narrow street is already a serious foodie mecca - who hasn't stopped by for a slice of Black Star Pastry's famed watermelon and strawberry cake, washed down with a beer at The Courthouse? - but the Porteño team's presence will give it a further boost. The two-storey site has been divided into two venues: the downstairs deli and bar, which opens Monday, and a bistro upstairs, slated to open in October.
All the ingredients used by the bistro will be available to purchase from the deli (we dare you to try to replicate the dishes), which will also serve an all-day menu of sandwiches, cheese plates and other deli deliciousness. While the shelves will be stocked with the best imported produce, Valore and Abrahanowicz are also experimenting with their own gourmet canned goods, care of a vintage canning machine on site.
