Update: Long Chim opens for dinner on Monday August 29, with bookings going live this Wednesday August 17 (tomorrow!). Dishes include crunchy prawn cakes, beef skewers with cumin, coriander and turmeric and cured pork sausages spiked with chilli and ginger. More details below.
David Thompson, global authority on Thai food and owner of street food restaurant Long Chim in both Singapore's Marina Bay Sands and Perth, is coming back to his hometown, finally confirming the rumours that have been following him for months.
Long Chim Sydney will open in a basement at 10-14 Martin Place in mid-August. The sprawling 190-seat space, designed by Kelly Ross of The Gentry, will span multiple levels and include an open plan kitchen, cocktail bar, communal tables, counter seats and more private dining alcoves.
Long Chim is Thai for 'come and taste' and that's exactly what Thompson hopes Sydneysiders will do (we don't think he has to worry). "At Long Chim we want to capture all the excitement and tastes of the streets of Bangkok," he says. "Long Chim is intended to be fun, 'sanuk' as the Thais say, with food and drinks that everyone loves. Our menu will have the dishes that many Thais miss the most when away from home."
