Soggy cardboard-tasting homemade sandwich or a mouth-watering customised bowl of Nippon's finest? No contest. From 11am tomorrow, Wednesday 14 September, Saké Jr is celebrating their first south of the border casual diner opening at 555 Bourke St by giving away 500 free bowls to the first 500 customers. And that's not even the best news...
The bowl isn't a standard one-size-fits-all - they're completely customisable from a selection of rice, noodles, salad or bao bun bases topped with crisp veg, proteins, sauces and condiments. The combos are endlessly delicious, think: udon rice noodles topped with crispy sesame soy pork, blistered beans in black garlic sauce, drizzled with apple soy ginger sauce and garnished with tempura crunch, or sushi rice with spicy yuzu ponzu salmon chirashi, charred corn and garlic shoots, Japanese salad dressing and toasted nori strips. And if you social share your lunchtime snap you're getting a free ice-cream sandwich next time you stop by.
But if taking a lunch break is looking unlikely for tomorrow, don't panic, you can still sample the goods without any financial outlay. From 7am on Thursday this junior player is offering the first 100 customers a free breakfast porridge bowl plus regular coffee.
Breakfast not your jam? The #TGIF crew is also catered for: from 5pm Friday the first 100 customers score a free build-your-own bowl and 300ml Hattori Hitgirl or Blushing Geisha craft beer.
The opening of this second junior casual eatery (Saké Jr Sydney opened in August this year) from pedigreed parent Saké marks a fresh new foodie-defining movement towards fast, healthy casual dining and it's a trend we can really get behind. On-the-go chef-made meals? Yes, Saké, yes.
Saké Jr opens from 11am Wednesday 14 September at 555 Bourke St, Melbourne. Regular opening hours after that will be Mon-Fri 7am-8pm, Sat 9am-8pm. sakejr.com.au
